Employee injured when ankle fractured replacing filter

At 5:00 p.m. on September 18, 2001, Employee #1, a maintenance mechanic employed by the Cargill Company - Salt Division, sustained a fracture of the left ankle while helping replace a vacuum filter dryer exhaust fan located on the second floor of the Evaporation Building of the employer's refinery in Newark, California. Employee #1 was hospitalized for about four days and underwent an open reduction and fixation for a left tibia lower third spiral fracture of the ankle with displacement.
