Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170841464
Event: 04/20/2001
Employee injured when fingers amputated by table saw

Employee #1, a saw operator, was ripping finger-jointed pine 9.5-inch wide door jambs, while wearing mesh gloves due to a skin-cracking problem on his fingers. Employee #1 had pushed material through the ripsaw and was reaching for the side-ripped material with his gloved left hand. The Powermatic Model 72A 12 to 14 inch, manual-feed table saw was provided with a hood and anti-kickback guard which was not in use on the saw at the time of the accident. Employee #1 did not have the hood or guard in place while doing straight rip cuts of one inch material, where the hood could have been used. The accident resulted in the amputation of the tip of Employee #1's left thumb, approximately half of three middle fingers and the tip of the little finger. Employee #1 was hospitalized.
