Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170843999
Event: 06/19/2000
Employee killed when backhoe overturned

Employee #1 was operating a CAT CP433C rubber-tired backhoe compactor with a sheepsfoot drum at a single-family residence having a new concrete deck installed around the swimming pool. He was compacting fill dirt and leveling the hillside by back-dragging the blade along the edge of the fill area when the machine overturned. It rolled over onto Employee #1, crushing him under the ROPS. He was killed. Employee #1 was not wearing the provided seat belt. He was also operating the rig too close to the edge of the fill while moving nearly parallel to it.
