Employee Sustains Burns in Propane Tank Explosion and Fire

At approximately 3:00 p.m. on June 10, 2008, Employee #1, a hazardous waste technician with the solid waste disposal agency, punctured a 1-pound propane tanks with the sharp end of an Estwing rock hammer. The propane tank released fuel to the atmosphere, and the fuel ignited. Employee #1's Tyvek suit caught on fire. Employee #1 ran approximately 100 ft to the emergency eyewash station, tearing off the burning garment as he ran. Employee #1's supervisor used a fire extinguisher to douse the flames. Employee #1 received second-degree and third-degree burns to his face, neck, ear, chest and forearms; and was hospitalized for several days.
