Event: 10/19/2000
Employee Amputates Thumb in Alternator Belt

On October 19, 2000, an employee was changing the V belt that drives an alternator on an aircraft push-back tug, with the help of a coworker. The employee could not get the belt onto the pulley, so the coworker jogged the starter in an effort to force the belt on. The engine unintentionally started up and the employee working the belt had his thumb caught between the pulley and belt, and part of his thumb was amputated. The employee was hospitalized and treated for thumb amputation.
