Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170888309
Event: 05/17/1997
Employee's fingers injured in wood jointer

Employee #1 worked in a cooperage that built wire barrels from rough staves constructed at another location. He was using a Jet 5 Hp, 16 in. wood jointer, model JJ-16-3, to plane the beveled edge of a wine barrel stave. Employee #1 was holding the stave with both hands and running the edge across the jointer blade when he amputated the first joint of his left middle finger and lacerated the tip of his left index finger. The guard did not automatically adjust itself to cover the open areas of the blade because a spring was missing from upper blade guard.
