Employee's thumb amputated after smashing with pipe tong

Employee #1, an experienced steam well rig-hand, was on a drilling deck, placing pipe tongs on a pipe. The pipe tong is a grasping clamp used to hold the pipe during connection or disconnection. Employee #1's left thumb was crushed when he failed to remove it from the contact area when the tong closed. He was transported to the hospital, where part of his thumb was surgically amputated.
