Employee's hand injured when starter pistol discharges

Employee #1, a temporary, part-time worker, was operating a garbage compactor. He was in the equipment cab loading a Weinberg 6 mm, 22 caliber signal pistol when it discharged. Employee #1 sustained trauma to his left hand, including the amputation of several fingers. The accident was caused by a lack of training and use of an inappropriate loading method.
