Investigation Summary
At approximately 9:45 a.m. on February 18, 2009, an employee inadvertently placed his left index finger under the unguarded pneumatic clamp portion on the Delta horizontal boring machine. He then looked to his left, when distracted by the noise of falling unassembled furniture parts, at the same time depressing the foot-operated clamp. The employee's finger was pinched between the 4-inch metallic pressure plate and the wood furniture piece. The employee reacted to his pain by pulling back his hand, removing the nail and a portion of the attached flesh. He was taken to the prison infirmary initially, and then to the Marin County Hospital, where hospitalized and the remainder of the first joint was surgically removed.
