Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 171017098
Event: 05/22/1995
Employee killed when struck by falling tree top

On May 22, 1995, Employee #1 was working as a member of a reforestation crew. He was waiting for a timber faller to fell a 46 in. diameter by 95 ft tall alder. When the faller asked if the crew was in the clear, they answered, "Yes." Employee #1 and three other coworkers were standing behind a tree that was 80 ft in front of the tree being felled. When the tree that was being cut fell, its top struck the tree that Employee #1 was standing behind. The top broke off and flew in the direction of the crew. The bigger portion struck Employee #1 and landed on top of him. Employee #1 died immediately. He was carried 1 1/2 miles to a point at which a coworker could call for emergency assistance.
