Employee's finger amputated by scrap shear

At approximately 2:00 p.m. on December 9, 1994, Employee #1, of Atlas Steel, Inc., a scrap metal dealer and salvage yard in Ogden, Utah, was cutting scrap aluminum on an Alligator repetitive stroke scrap shear. A piece of scrap jammed the jaws of the shear. Employee #1 tried to free the piece by pulling and pounding on it. As he pulled the jammed scrap piece toward himself, it came loose and the jaws immediately started to cut. His right little finger became caught between them and was crushed. Employee #1 was taken to the Ogden Regional Medical Center, where his finger was amputated.
