Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170562508
Event: 09/14/1993
Employee struck by fragments of exploding sanding wheel

Employee #1, of Professional Staff Management, Inc., was a contracted employee working in the vehicle garage of M.E.I. Contractors. He had been working for M.E.I. Contractors for 2 months. That morning the lead mechanic had installed a new wheel (Slacker general purpose Moini Disc, 4 1/2 in. by 1/4 in. by 7/8 in.) on a hand held sander (Match Tools 3/8 in. high speed sander, model MT 1778, serial #AK-906224). Both the mechanic and Employee #1 had tested the sander by applying power to it to ensure that the wheel was secure. As Employee #1 attempted to grind a piece of metal with the sander, the wheel exploded. The wheel sent fragments into his right small finger and the right side of his abdomen. The lead mechanic immediately took the employee to Cotton Wood Hospital, where he was treated and released. His finger required stitches; his abdomen was burnt, but required only cleaning. Employee #1 will be unable to work for 6 to 8 weeks.
