Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170562474
Event: 08/07/1993
Employee's fingertip amputated in meat grinder

Employee #1 was in the meat department, grinding pork sausage with a Hobart mixer. He lifted the lid (which has an interlock) and observed that some sausage was left in the bottom of the grinder. He reached in to push the sausage toward the grinder, catching and amputating his fingertip. Causal factors were that Employee #1 did not wait for the machine to run down before reaching into it. As well, he reached his hand into the machine rather than using a spatula to push the meat to the grinder.
