Employee Amputates Several Fingers When Saw Catches Hand

On February 1, 2006, Employee #1 was working as a full-time payroll employee for a manufacturer of components for the aerospace industry. He was in the employer's shipping and receiving wood shop, operating a Delta 10-inch tilting arbor saw, with Serial Number 989F96998 (D-10). A coworker noticed that Employee #1 was wearing gloves while ripping a 2-by-4 approximately 24 inches long. Employee #1 had the cantilevered saw blade guard in the setup position, which places the guard approximately 8 inches above the saw blade. Employee #1 had fed the 2-by-4 into the blade and was near the end of the cut, when he reached over and behind the blade with his left hand to grasp the 2-by-4. The blade grabbed his glove and pulled his left hand into the unguarded saw blade. Employee #1 suffered a complete amputation of the thumb and fifth finger, a near amputation of the fourth digit with proximal phalanx fracture, and a tendon laceration to the index finger, all on his left hand. He was transported to the hospital, where was hospitalized for his injuries.
