Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170129795
Event: 01/10/1993
Employee struck by paper roll, sustains fractured pelvis

Employee #1 was engaged in the process of cutting and preparing 4,000 pound paper rolls for final packaging prior to shipping to the weighing department. A larger roll of approximately 20 feet was rewound on paper machine #1, then divided into three smaller rolls. These smaller (4,000 pound) rolls were then sent down a slight ramp to be prepared for shipment. At approximately 5:20 a.m., Employee #1 was standing at the base of the ramp receiving the three smaller rolls as they came off the table of paper machine #1. As the rolls came toward him he noticed that the center roll had not been trimmed (slabbed) effectively enough, so as the roll slowed to a near stop Employee #1 tried to get in front of it. As he moved he did not see one of the outer rolls go by the center roll, hit a stop, and return up the ramp. As Employee #1 was about to go around the side of the center roll, this outer roll hit him in the pelvic area, knocking him down. He sustained a fractured pelvis.
