Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170129050
Event: 09/08/1992
Employee's back injured when struck by log

At approximately 8:30 a.m. on September 7, 1992, Employee #1, of Lulay Timber Co., Inc., was working on the landing as a chaser on a Cat logging side. The log loader had moved approximately 40 ft ahead to another log pile to sort out the logs stacked by a Cat. The loader operator had set three short logs behind him to be moved to another pile. He was setting a 40 ft long fir log around to another pile when Employee #1 stepped up toward the back of the loader to saw limbs from the short logs. When the loader operator swung the loader around with the long fir log, he spotted Employee #1 in the way of his swing and tried to stop and reverse his swing. The sudden movement caused the log to slip from the heel and strike Employee #1. Suffering multiple back injuries, Employee #1 was transported by helicopter to St. Charles Hospital in Bend, OR.
