Employee's Arm Is Fractured When Caught in Machine

At approximately 11:05 p.m. on August 28, 2007, Employee #1 was operating a 640 pound block cutter, cutting blocks of cheese. The machine cuts 640 pound blocks of cheese into 16-40 pound blocks. After a block of cheese was put through the cutters with a push plate, Employee #1 tripped an air valve to activate the air cylinders to retract the push plate to its starting position. While the push plate was retracting, he put his right arm into the framework of the machine to retrieve a nut that he noticed on the floor. A bar that was connected to the ends of both air cylinder pistons crushed his arm between it and the frame of the machine. He was hospitalized with a fractured arm.
