Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170122188
Event: 10/11/1994
Employee dies, another hurt, when shot by escaped convicts

Employee #1, a TBI officer, and Employee #2, a deputy, were participating in a search for two convicts who had escaped from the Turney Center in Omly, TN. The manhunt included agents from the TBI, the FBI, and local police and sheriff's departments. The convicts had been sighted in the area a few days before the shooting, and tips indicated that they might be in a house in Newport, TN. A group of officers, led by Employee #1, allegedly volunteered to enter the house. While they were searching the rooms, gunfire issued from a bedroom, and struck Employee #1 in the arm. The other officers quickly left the house. Employee #1 could not escape through the front door and was shot repeatedly and killed. As Employee #2 and another deputy attempted to ram down the front door, Employee #2 was shot in the hand.
