Employee sustains finger amputation from chain and sprocket

At approximately 8:30 a.m. on September 6, 2003, Employee #1 was working at a poultry house, performing his regular duties. The employee observed and attempted to remove poultry feathers from the auto chicken feeder line (row 4). The hinged guard over the chain & sprocket was lifted. He did not turn off the power to the feeder prior to reaching into the moving chain unit and his right hand came into contact with the chain and the sprocket. As a result, the employee sustained serious injuries to his right hand, including a mid-amputation to his ring finger. Employee #1 was not hospitalized.
