Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170613863
Event: 07/26/1994
Employee falls as floor joist collapses

On Tuesday, July 26, 1994, Employee #1 of Bolin Construction, Inc., was working in a house on a new subdivision. He was preparing to place partial board flooring on a manufactured floor joist above the garage. While the unit of partial board flooring was being loaded, the movement of placing it caused the floor joist to separate from the joist hanger and collapse to the floor. Employee #1 fell to the floor along with the separated floor joist and the unit of flooring. The Folsom Fire Department responded very quickly to the accident and transported the Employee #1 by ambulance to Mercy Folsom Hospital in Folsom, CA, where he was admitted with a broken lower leg and ankle. It was found that the floor joist had not been nailed into the joist hanger on the back wall or into the large glu-lam beam that was positioned across the garage about 5 ft in back of the garage door.
