Employee partially amputates fingers adjusting shaper gate

Employee #1 was setting up an auto feed shaper (router) to cut a groove into a 10 in. by 12 in. board. The shaper had to be running. Employee #1 was using his left hand to adjust the gate (guide) into the blade. He was holding the board so that he could tell when he had adjusted it to the right depth. The blade grabbed the board and jerked Employee #1's right hand into the blade, cutting off the index finger at the first knuckle, and cutting the next finger and the thumb. He required hospitalization. Employee #1 was well trained on the job. He did not speak English, so it was hard to gather information.
