Employee's thumb amputated in molder head

Employee #1 was being trained as a molder feeder and had been on the job three days. The molder is like a planer, but runs at a slower speed and does smoother work. Employee #1 was running a 1 in. by 6 in. board, which was catching up at the back rip fence (guide). The setup man raised the hood, which is approximately 6 ft long and covers all the heads. He had to have the molder running so he could tell when he had it set correctly. Employee #1 was supposed to stand back but went up to the machine and leaned over the setup man. Employee #1 put his left thumb into the turning bottom head; his thumb was amputated to the first joint. He had worked in lumber mills before but had little experience with molders.
