Employee injures finger on machine

At approximately 2:30 p.m. on December 11, 2003, Employee #1, a carpenter with the company for 13 years, was allowed to operate different machinery including a shaper machine. The company engages in making residential cabinets. On the day of accident, Employee #1 operated the shaper machine to make cabinet doors. While Employee #1 was passing a workpiece (2.5 inches wide, 10.5 inches long, 1 inch thick) through the blade on the shaper machine, the glove on his left hand was caught into the blade. There were no actual witnesses to the accident. The employer does not allow employees to wear gloves when working with the machine. Employee #1 was taken to Northridge Hospital and hospitalized for 2 days. As a result of the accident, he had four fingers on his left hand amputated to the second knuckle.
