Investigation Summary
At approximately 10:00 a.m. on November 1, 2002, Employee #1, a carpenter working for J.S. Construction on a residential home remodeling job, was attempting to re-saw (make two pieces of board the same length and width but only half the thickness) a poplar board on a Dewalt portable table saw, Model DW744, to create trim for a window. The employee removed the table saw guard to perform the re-sawing operation because the board was too high to fit underneath the guard and pins. While cutting the board lengthwise, the employee reached over the saw blade, made contact with the blade, amputating half of his first knuckle on his left index finger. The amputated portion of the knuckle was placed in a baggie on put on. Employee #1 was transported by emergency services to UCSD hospital in Hillcrest for treatment. The physician was unable to reattach the amputated portion of the employee's knuckle. The remaining flesh was pulled over the tip of the left index finger and stitches were added to hold the skin in place.
