Employee Crushes Hand When Caught in Compaction Process

On March 14, 1999, Employee #1, a grocery store clerk, was collecting cardboard boxes after stocking the shelves. He began performing a compaction and baling process, unaware that the interlock device between the access door and ram had been disabled. Employee #1 activated the equipment, while looking away and without removing his hand from the edge of the compaction department. The ram caught his right hand and caused a crushing injury requiring surgery and extensive rehabilitation. He was not hospitalized for treatment.
