Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201035391
Event: 09/15/2003
Employee Amputates Finger in Band Saw

On September 15, 2003, an employee, a manager of the meat department was working on a band saw machine for slicing a somewhat irregular piece of beef. The machine was a HOBART band saw, Model Number 5801, Serial Number 27-1007-323, with 3450 rpm and three horse power. There was a back plate 7-in. by 16-in. on the machine table set 1-in. behind the saw blade. No hand tool or push stick was used by the employee even though there was a hand tool, size 5-in. by 9.5-in. by 0.25-in. thick with one face serrated, available. The employee used his two hands to feed the piece of meat in the moving saw blade. The blade at one stage of operation caught the bone in the meat and forced the meat to spin thereby pulling the employee's hand toward the blade and causing amputation of the right little finger and injury to the right thumb. The vertical saw guard was open up to about 6-in. above the machine table to allow the meat to be fed to the blade. The employee was taken to the Long Beach Memorial Medical Center where he was hospitalized and treated for finger amputation.
