Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170812713
Event: 04/11/1995
Employee injured in trench cave-in

During the midafternoon of April 4, 1995, Employee #1, an operator with Dirt Movers, Inc., was working at a construction site in Roseville, CA. Employee #1, a superintendent, and a grade setter were repairing a section of 10 in. VCP sewer line that had a depressed section at a depth of 14 ft. The superintendent was operating a large excavator and had started to bench out the 26 in. wide trench at the top. He was following the outline of the backfill from when from when the trench was previously compacted when the excavation caved in, pinning Employee #1's left leg against the trench wall. Employee #1 was treated at the site and then transported to Roseville General Hospital, where he was admitted for a crushed and broken leg.
