Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170614853
Event: 01/08/1996
Employee's hand cut by chop saw

Employee #1 was a defect cutter for Yuba River Moulding & Millwork, Inc., a molding mill that included a cut stock and finger joint facility. He would cut the knots and defects out of boards with a chop jump saw, which was below the table and completely enclosed by a metal frame with sides. The good pieces would then be glued together (finger jointed) to make a long board again. A blow pipe in the saw removed sawdust and small end trims. At the time of the accident, this pipe had become plugged. Employee #1 removed the side of the saw with the guard and reached in with a small stick to clear the pipe. His left hand struck against the saw blade and he suffered a severe cut. Employee #1 had turned off the saw, but was able to get inside before it stopped coasting.
