Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170873350
Event: 04/03/2002
Employee Injured When Shot By His Own Gun

At approximately 3:30 p.m. on April 3, 2002, Employee #1, a police officer, received a gunshot wound to his left hand. Employee #1 had returned to the police station following a day of practice with the SWAT team and he had sat down in the briefing room to clean his gun, a Glock 40 caliber, Model 22. To clean the gun, the first step is to remove the slid, which is done by placing one hand on the slid and the other on the grip, then the trigger has to be pulled which will release the slid for removal. Employee #1 disregarded standard procedures and didn't unload his gun before entering the building. When Employee #1 pulled the trigger the gun discharged and the bullet struck him in the fleshy part of the hand. Employee #1 was treated and released from the hospital.
