Employee's Finger Is Amputated in Truck Tank Valve

On September 17, 2002, Employee #1, a truck driver for MSM Trucking, was at the Oak Grove Dairy in Layton, CA, loading his truck tank with milk. The valve at the back of the truck tank was equipped with a safety pin that was supposed to be inserted in the valve stem when the valve was open. This was to prevent fluid from getting behind the plunger on the valve and forcing it closed while the tank was being loaded. Employee #1 started the pump to begin filling the tank when he noticed that the pin was not in place. He then attempted to install the pin with the pump still running. In the process he touched the valve stem and it slammed closed, amputating his right middle finger at the first knuckle. Employee #1 was transported to Valley Industrial Family Medical Group for emergency treatment.
