Investigation Summary
On June 6, 1995, Employee #1, of Laidlaw, was using a Hotsy Steam Cleaner, identification #9173, to wash off some hoses. This is not his normal job assignment. This particular steam cleaner is portable, with a gasoline powered motor. The spray comes out of the wand nozzle in a broad very thin stream at 2,000 psi. Employee #1 was rolling a hose over with his left foot, as he was spraying it with the wand. His foot went under the spray. Although he was wearing steel-toed safety boots, the stream of water cleared the steel toe and immediately cut through the leather of the boot, lacerating his foot. The laceration was treated but because of the resulting infection, Employee #1 required hospitalization. The employer provides training in the use of this particular steam cleaner, but Employee #1 had not received this training.
