Employee's finger amputated after spray paint injection

At approximately 11:00 a.m. on November 3, 1993, Employee #1 was spray painting when the pressurized spray gun he was using became clogged. He attempted to clean the tip of the spray gun with his left hand while a finger on his right hand was on the activating trigger. Employee #1 accidentally depressed the trigger, injecting paint under pressure into his finger. On December 14, 1993, at Valley Orthopedic Surgery Assoc., Van Nuys, CA, Employee #1 underwent surgery resulting in the amputation of his left index finger. The employer was cited for failing to ensure that Employee #1 was wearing protective gloves.
