Investigation Summary
Employee #3, of Viking Freight System, Inc., Bakersfield, CA, began unloading a freight truck trailer. He entered the trailer, went to the front of the trailer, and looked at the load, which had ten or more bottles. He then decided to unload two bottles on the other side of the trailer. His eyes started burning and he exited the trailer. Employee #3 told Employee #2 about the problem. Employee #2 entered the trailer and when his eyes started burning, he also exited the trailer. Employees #2 and #3 went to Employee #1 with their concerns. Employee #1 entered the trailer and also experienced eye problems. He exited the trailer and instructed the driver to pull the trailer away from the dock. The fire department was called and all three employees were transported to Mercy Hospital, Bakersfield, for treatment of inhalation of chloropicrin vapors. Employees #2 and #3 were hospitalized.
