Employee fingers amputated when conveyor caught hand

On August 5, 2001, a serious injury accident occurred at a tomato field being harvested by employees of S.K. Foods. Employee #1, a harvest machine operator, had finished his shift and was getting ready to turn the machine over to the next operator when he decided to clean dirt and debris off of the conveyor belt system of the harvester. He did not shut the machine down and did not deenergize the conveyor system. The glove he was wearing on his left hand got caught in the conveyor which pulled the hand into the machine. Employee #1 suffered the amputation of three fingers of his left hand and was taken to the U.C. Davis Hospital for emergency treatment.
