Employee's finger amputated in automatic feeder machine

On November 7, 2001, Employee #1, a member of the brooder crew, was repairing one of the automatic feeder machines in Brooder Barn Number 8 of Foster Farms brooder facility in Riverdale, CA. The machine had not been deenergized. It was only turned off at the local switch. Employee #1 was using the belt and pulley to roll the gears to install a sheer pin when another employee attempted to start another feeder and turned on the switch to the one being worked on. Employee #1's hand was pulled into the belt and pulley and it severed the left index finger. Employee #1 was taken to Hanford Community Hospital for emergency treatment.
