Investigation Summary
At approximately 8:00 a.m.on September 18, 2000, an employee was utilizing a tree worker's saddle to harvest dates from a date palm. The worker's saddle carrying the employee was suspended by two chain links attached to the date fronds separately through a snap hook (latch) and a shepherd hook. To change his position from the right side of the ladder to the left side, the employee removed the shepherd hook from the fronds. When he attempted to move to the left, he inadvertently fell about 30 feet to the ground sustaining fatal injuries. The employee was not tied-in with an approved safety strap or rope. The body was transported to Riverside County Coroner's office.
