Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 201112224
Event: 11/16/1999
Employee injured when struck by sheet metal

On November 16, 1999, Employee #1 was sorting through a stack of 4 ft by 4 ft pieces of sheet metal that are used in building parking lot booth enclosures, and other parking structure protective systems. Each of the sheets weighed approximately 50 lb. The sheets were stacked against a wall. He pulled them forward to inspect them and select one. While, pulling the stack towards himself, the stack became unstable and fell. He tried to stabilize the falling stack, but could not, and proceeded to move out of the way of the falling stack. He was not able to move quickly enough and was caught in his lower legs by sheet metal. The impact of the sheet metal on his legs fractured both ankles. He was hospitalized for his injures and received emergency treatment to reset the fractures and stabilize the blood loss.
