EMPLOYEES STRUCK IN EYE BY CONCRETE CHIP

EMPLOYEE #1, WHO WORKED FOR THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS IN LANCASTER, CALIFORNIA, HAD BEEN USING A JACKHAMMER TO BREAK UP THE CONCRETE BASE OF A FIRE HYDRANT THAT WAS TO BE RELOCATED. HE WAS WEARING EYE PROTECTION WHILE USING THE JACKHAMMER. THE CHISEL BECAME STUCK IN THE CONCRETE, SO EMPLOYEE #1 REMOVED THE JACKHAMMER FROM THE CHISEL, LAID IT DOWN, AND PLACED HIS EYE PROTECTION UP ON HIS HELMET. HE STRUCK THE CHISEL ON ITS SIDE WITH AN 8-POUND HAMMER IN AN ATTEMPT TO DISLODGE THE CONCRETE AND A CONCRETE CHIP FLEW UP, STRIKING HIS RIGHT EYE.
