Event: 06/04/1993
Untrained employee lacerates toe with weed wacker

At 10:00 a.m. on June 4, 1993, Employee #1 was clearing a drainage ditch with a coworker. He was using a machete and his coworker was using a gas powered weed wacker. When the coworker became tired of using the weed wacker, Employee #1 took it from him. It bounced on the ground, cut through his work boot, and mutilated his left fourth toe, which was later partially amputated. He was hospitalized and released by St. John's Regional Medical Center, Oxnard, CA. The employer has a training program for employees who are qualified to use a weed wacker. Employee #1 was not qualified and had been instructed to use a machete instead. He was disciplined.
