Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170739031
Event: 07/25/1995
Employee's leg caught between truss and roller

At approximately 1:30 p.m. on July 25, 1995, Employee #1 was making preformed trusses for houses by connecting parts of wood trusses together with plates of gang nails. The trusses are then passed through a 1 1/2 in. gap between 12 ft long by 18 in. diameter rollers. The rollers press the gang nails into the wood. The operator stopped the roller to make an adjustment and reversed the roller to reach where he needed to. In the meantime, Employee #1 placed himself behind the roller opposite from the controls and between the firdown, which is a part of the truss that sticks out from the rest of the truss. When the roller was reversed, Employee #1's left leg was squeezed between the firdown and the unguarded roller. There was a stop bar across the front of the roller but none on the back. The operator stopped the machine. A citation was issued to the employer for failing to guard the roller.
