Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170165922
Event: 12/13/1992
Employee's hand caught in rollers of printing press

At approximately 12:08 a.m. on December 13, 1992, Employee #1, of the Los Angeles Times, noticed that the J-press with yellow ink was not working properly. Employee #1 removed the front cover guard of the rollers in order to observe the ink rail. The glove that she was wearing became caught by the inking rollers, pulling her right hand between the rollers and causing loss of skin on the top and bottom of the hand. Because inking rollers are rubber lined, a more serious crushing was prevented; nevertheless, Employee #1 required one week of hospitalization at the Fountain Valley Hospital. Employee #1 said that she was not cleaning, adjusting, or servicing but only looking to see what was wrong with the J-press. She thought there would be no danger because the rail had no moving parts. Employee #1 had been employed by the Los Angeles Times for nine years and was a press person for four years. She had received safety training from the Times. No accident-related violation was noted.
