Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170883292
Event: 02/14/1995
Employee's finger amputated by string caught in rollers

Employee #1, of Clougherty Meat Packing, Vernon, CA, was using a fiber string as a feeler gauge to set the tolerance for the rollers on a casing machine. He looped the string over his finger and over the palm of his hand, with the end inserted into the rollers, feeling for the correct tension on the string. The string became caught in the rollers, pulling the string tight over the finger and amputating the third finger, distal phalanx, on his left hand.
