Employee's fingers amputated by saw as board kicks back

Employee #1 was cutting particle board on a table saw. He removed the saw guard and adjusted the blade to cut at 45 degrees. He pushed the particle board through with a push stick, but then tried to pick up the particle board with his left hand after it had passed by the blade. When the particle board kicked back, his left hand was carried back over the blade, and he lost the distal phalanges on the ring and little fingers of his left hand.
