AT 6:45 P.M. ON NOVEMBER 1, 1993, EMPLOYEE #1 WAS STACKING NEWSPAPERS IN THE AD ROOM. SHE BENT OVER TO LIFT A SMALL STACK WEIGHING 10 POUNDS AND FELT HER BACK GIVE OUT. EMPLOYEE #1 WAS HELPED TO HER CAR, AND SHE DROVE TO THE INTERCOMMUNITY EMERGENCY ROOM IN COVINA, WHERE SHE WAS TREATED AND RELEASED FOR A LUMBAR SACRAL SPRAIN. SHE WAS TOLD TO TAKE THE WEEK OFF AND TO REPORT BACK TO WORK IF SHE FELT WELL ENOUGH.
