Employee injured when struck by backing freight truck

At approximately 2:00 p.m. on August 27, 1993, Employee #1, of Health Valley Foods in Irwindale, CA, was standing inside a loading dock when a truck trailer backed into the dock and pinned him against the dock pit's west wall, according to a police report. Employee #1 was hospitalized with a fractured pelvis. The 48 ft long trailer truck belonged to Highway Express, in Fresno, CA, and was being driven by one of the company's employees. The driver stated that the truck was slowly backing down the inclined pit of the dock when Employee #1 was hit. Employee #1 was not sure if the truck was moving out of the dock or inside the dock. The employer stated that Employee #1 should not have been in the dock pit.
