Employee's leg fractured by falling tractor radiator

On February 17, 1993, Employee #1, a heavy equipment mechanic for River Garden Farms, Knights Landing, CA, was removing the radiator and nose section from a D-5 Caterpillar tractor. To prevent inadvertent movement when the bolts were removed, the tractor should have been blocked or secured with a block or chains. Consequently, when the last bolt was removed, the radiator/nose section sprang loose and fell to the floor, striking the mechanic on the left leg and breaking the femur just above his knee. Immediate first aid was administered and the employee was transported by ambulance to Woodland Memorial Hospital, Woodland, CA.
