Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170720239
Event: 11/11/1992
Employee burned by hot cream cheese

Employee #1, of Beatrice Cheese, was adjusting a valve on a hot cream cheese mixer when the valve dropped out of the line, causing a hot liquid release. The liquid came into contact with parts of Employee #1's face, hands, arms and chest. Suffering first- and second-degree burns, Employee #1 required hospitalization. There was no permanent scarring. The valve is held in place by a clamp that holds the mated flanges of the valve and supply duct. The line is pressurized at 60 psi. The valve controls the thickness of the liquid. After the accident, it was discovered that the clamp had failed at the screw part.
