Employee's thumb amputated when caught in saw

At approximately 6:30 a.m. on February 10, Employee #1 was working on the back side of a vertical panel saw. He was standing near the frame where the carriage was feeding the saw at a very slow rate when he placed his left hand between the frame and the carriage. The thumb was caught at the pinch point and smashed. He was taken to Western Hand Center. The left thumb was amputated at the distal phalanx. He was hospitalized for 3 days and later treated as an outpatient. The employer was strongly advised to enforce and oversee the safety procedures to prevent any accident in the future.
