Employee's thumb amputated by contact with router blade

On October 2, 1993, Employee #1 was operating a routing machine. He had only operated the machine for about 50 minutes over 2 days and had been given brief instruction. He was running 1 inch by 4 inch and 1 inch by 6 inch boards through a template mounted to a router table, cutting a 10 inch chamfer on two sections (both sides of the 40 inch board). When the board became stuck, Employee #1 applied more pressure, but his hand slipped and his thumb contacted the vertically mounted router blade, which was still rotating. The distal phalanx of his left thumb was amputated. Employee #1 was taken to Ride Out Hospital in Marysville, where he was treated for the amputation and released.
