Investigation Summary

Investigation Nr: 170718837
Event: 05/20/1993
Employee hit by trusses dropped by crane

Employee #1, a subcontractor, was working on a motel addition. A crane was hired by the hour to load bundles of trusses onto the roof. Employee #1 was standing on a second-floor wall giving directions and guiding the loads. A load above was being moved into position when the crane tube locked, breaking the cable above the ball and causing the bundle of trusses to drop on top of the building and fall over. Employee #1 jumped from the wall to the floor and was hit on his way down by the broken, falling trusses. The employer was cited for not ensuring that the crane was certified.
